We Recommend Hiscox
Meadowbrook was founded in 1955 as a retail insurance agency in Michigan. Within a few years, the agency started to focus in on specialty commercial insurance products for trade groups and associations.
In 1985 Star Insurance Company was created by Meadowbrook, which continued to acquire insurance companies and agencies to grow its business, now operating in 50 states as well as D.C. In 1998 Meadowbrook acquired AmeriTrust Insurance Corporation, and in 2017 took the AmeriTrust name for the entire group. The Meadowbrook name is still in use by Meadowbrook Insurance Agency, one of the company’s subsidiaries.
The company’s headquarters is in Southfield, Michigan, and they sell their products across the country through agents and brokers, including their own agencies.
All of AmeriTrust’s products are commercial in nature and are aimed at specific niche industries. They are broken down into four categories.
Small Business Unit Products
Small business products are offered for two niche markets. FitnessEdge is a package policy for health and fitness facilities, including health clubs, small studios, swimming pools, and recreation centers.
AutoEdge is the product designed for auto sales and service businesses. Included industries are new and used dealers, general auto repair, paint and body shops, and specialty auto shops.
AmeriTrust’s Specialty Products category offers Excess Worker’s Compensation and Surety.
Excess Worker’s Comp is available to self-insured clients and includes a long list of industries including school districts, universities, health care systems, manufacturing, restaurants, and retail.
The company also offers a selection for surety and fidelity products.
AmeriTrust offers wholesale specialty products in several categories, particularly industries requiring some specific underwriting expertise.
The main categories are garage, environmental, marine, and umbrella & excess.
Excess & Surplus
Excess & Surplus products are offered through Century Insurance Group, a subsidiary that specializes in this type of product.
Rate information is not available on their website and is online quoting is not offer, which is standard for this type of insurance. Due to the very specific nature of specialty commercial insurance policies, quotes are best obtained by speaking directly with a broker. This will ensure the accuracy both of the type of product being quoted and of the premium.
Online claims submission is only available for Worker’s Compensation claims. These can also be submitted over the phone, by email, or by fax, and these three options also apply to all other claims.
There are separate claims lines for Worker’s Compensation and all other claims. A contact email is also provided for those looking to follow up on a claim, or the toll-free customer service line can be used for claim information.
All claims, once submitted, will be sent to an adjuster who will then contact the insured with the next steps.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
AmeriTrust’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) file still appears under the Meadowbrook name, and the company has an A+ rating with no complaints on file in the past three years.
We were unable to find customer reviews under either the old name or the new, which is pretty common for this type of insurance company. With commercial and particularly with specialty commercial, complaints and problems are typically handled through avenues other than online review sites.
The Bottom Line
AmeriTrust is a specialty company that likely gets much of its business through brokers and referrals, and it is not the type of company the average person will encounter when shopping for insurance. They have been around for a long time and offer some products that may be difficult to locate, making them worth a look for companies that are seeking the specific products they provide. We recommend working with a trusted broker for assistance with this type of product.
