About Atlanta Life
Atlanta Life was founded in 1905 by Alonzo Herndon, who purchased the Atlanta Protective and Benevolent Association for $140. Born into slavery, Herndon went on to become Atlanta’s wealthiest black businessman and his company one of the top African-American owned businesses in the country.
Atlanta Life Financial Group today is comprised of Atlanta Life General Agency, Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Atlanta Life Business Insurance, and Herndon Capital Management. The company’s headquarters is still located in Atlanta, GA.
The majority of Atlanta Life business is not in direct insurance sales to the public; rather, they are a major reinsurance provider for group life and other insurance products. They do offer business insurance policies, but the rest of the products they provide are through partnerships with other companies, acting as a broker.
Atlanta Life Products
Since business insurance is the only product that Atlanta Life appears to underwrite directly, and other companies underwrite all other products, we will focus this section on business products.
Atlanta Life writes business insurance for a wide variety of industries, including:
- Accounting Firms
- Business Services
- IT Services
- Law Firms
- Professional Services
- Real Estate
- Restaurants/Food Service
They have a variety of products available to cover the needs of each individual market.
The Businessowner’s Policy is a package plan offering a comprehensive policy to meet the needs of many types of business. This type of policy generally covers things like business property, liability, and loss of income.
A variety of other individual products can be added to create a package or purchased individually. These include:
- Commercial auto to cover business-owned and used vehicles
- Commercial property to provide coverage for your company’s equipment, supplies and other physical property from a variety of risks
- Cyber Insurance, which provides coverage for risks like data breaches and other internet-based perils
- Directors and Officers liability insurance to provide extra protection against lawsuits brought against key officers in every day
- Employment Practices Liability for coverage against risks involved in employee issues
- Errors & Omissions insurance, which provides coverage to protect you when a mistake causes a problem for someone else

- General Liability, which provides coverage against a wide variety of risks
- Hired & Non-Owned Auto coverage
- Professional Liability insurance to protect professionals from negligence claims
- Commercial Umbrella
- Worker’s Compensation
The website does not provide much in the way of details on these products, therefore we are only able to give basics.
Atlanta Life Rates
Online quoting is not available for this company, which is not at all surprising given that they are primarily an agency and not a direct insurer. They do offer a convenient contact form, which allows inquiries about their products and requests for rate quotes.
Because business insurance rates can vary widely, obtaining a specific and personalized quote is far more accurate than an online quote would be.
The somewhat confusing Atlanta Life website does not offer information on claims. Since most of the products they list are actually serviced elsewhere, it makes sense that Atlanta Life does not offer claims information for those products.
As far as the products they do underwrite, we can only assume claims information is provided directly to the insured or is found within a customer login portal.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Atlanta Life has a few Better Business Bureau (BBB) pages, under different names. Atlanta General Agency has an A+ rating with no complaints on file over the past three years and just one negative review. There is another Atlanta Life Insurance file with an A rating and one complaint on file over the past three years that the company has responded to.
We were unable to find any customer reviews of this company, which is not unusual; this is not the sort of company that frequently has direct dealings with customers. Most people will deal with them as an agent or broker. As a result, they are likely to bring complaints against the actual insurance company and not the agency.
The Bottom Line
Atlanta Life appears to have a strong presence in the reinsurance and group insurance industries, as well as business insurance. They are also a large general agency but are unlikely to be the type of company on the list of the average person searching for life, home insurance, or auto insurance. With so little available regarding the company and its products and a somewhat confusing website that does not always make it clear which products they actually underwrite, we are unable to form an opinion on this company.
