One of the oldest insurance companies in the travel market, RoamRight offers several levels of package policy with customizable upgrades available. They are an international company, writing trip protection and travel medical plans around the globe.

About RoamRight

RoamRight has been in business for 60 years and operates as the trade name of Arch Insurance Company. That company, in turn, is a subsidiary of Arch Group, a Bermuda-based international insurer. RoamRight’s U.S. headquarter is in Hunt Valley, MD. This all makes RoamRight one of the few travel insurance companies that does not rely on an outside company to underwrite its policies.

Package policies for both single and multiple trips are available with several levels of coverage, and there is also a standalone medical policy. Some plans are only offered through the company’s partner travel suppliers, but the other plans can be purchased directly online.

RoamRight Products

RoamRight has three levels of single-trip package policy available on the website, and two others that are only sold through partners. They also offer a multi-trip plan and a separate travel medical plan.

Single-Trip Plans

The three levels of single trip plans offered online each have increasing benefit levels.

Essential is the base plan. It covers the total trip cost for both cancellation and interruption in most cases (some limits apply) and it also has trip delay, missed connection, and baggage coverage. One child per covered adult can be added at no charge.

This plan also includes $15,000 in emergency medical coverage with a $50 deductible and $150,000 in medical evacuation coverage. Medical coverage can be increased on this plan by $25,000 at the time of purchase.

The Preferred plan is a step up, with increased trip interruption coverage of 150% and higher limits on the other trip protection benefits as well. It allows the addition of one child per paid adult at no extra charge.

This plan increases emergency medical to $50,000, and evacuation coverage to $500,000, and also adds accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) coverage at $10,000. Cancel for Any Reason can be added to this plan for an extra charge, and medical coverage can be upgraded by $50,000.

Finally, the Elite plan is the most comprehensive and has the highest coverage limits for trip protection. This plan also covers one child per paid adult at no charge and includes cancellation for work reasons.

Elite does not increase the emergency medical over the Preferred plan, which is unusual, but does increase medical evacuation coverage to $1,000,000. AD&D is at $25,000, and this plan adds air AD&D at $100,000. This plan also offers the option to add Cancel for Any Reason coverage.

Other coverage upgrades offered are $50,000 in additional medical, sports coverage or hazardous sports coverage, and rental car coverage, options that appear only at checkout.

Pro Plans (Travel Supplier Only)

RoamRight’s two Pro level plans are only available through partner travel suppliers.

The basic Pro plan includes coverage similar to the Preferred option, but it adds a few benefits such as political and security evacuation coverage at $100,000.

The Pro Plus option has similar coverage levels, but bumps up the medical coverage to primary rather than excess.

RoamRight’s Multi-Trip plan covers multiple trips over the course of a year, with a maximum trip length of 30 days. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage are at trip cost, and the plan includes basic trip protection coverage such as delay and baggage.

There is $25,000 in aggregate medical coverage on this plan with $250,000 in medical evacuation that can only be used once per policy year. Political and natural disaster evacuation is also covered at $100,000.

Medical (Travel Health)

RoamRight offers travel health plans that provide comprehensive medical coverage during travel outside the U.S. Coverage limits range from $50,000 up to $500,000, and benefits include a variety of medical needs. The deductible for all coverage levels is $250.

These plans are medical focused, but they do include $5,000 in trip interruption coverage and $250 for baggage. AD&D is also included at $25,000.

We ran a quote using our usual sample of a 30-year-old California resident with a 7-day trip at a cost of $5,000.

RoamRight’s base plan, Essential, came back at $128. That is a little lower than the rates we have seen for similar coverage elsewhere.

The Preferred plan came in at $154, which is a relatively minor price increase for the amount of coverage the plan adds.

The Elite plan was quoted at $248. This is nearly double the cost of the Preferred plan, but coverage is not increased in most areas, particularly not commensurate with the increase in premium.

Of the three, the Preferred appears to offer the best value in single trip coverage. Each plan has upgrades available that will increase the premium.

We quoted the Multi-Trip plan as well, for the same traveler, and it came back at $320. This is definitely on the higher end for annual package plans.

Finally, we ran a quote for the Medical plan, which came back at $11.36. That’s about in line with other travel medical products, leaning towards the higher side.

RoamRight has a wide variety of options for filing a claim, and one of the most comprehensive claims information pages we’ve seen for a travel insurance company.

Claims can be filed online when logged into the customer area of the site. Forms can also be printed, filled out, and returned by mail, email, or fax. The claims department can be reached by phone during business hours, Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern time. Policyholders can call a 24-hour line for emergency assistance.

In addition to detailed information on how the claims process works, the RoamRight website also offers information on how to appeal a claim.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

There is no direct Better Business Bureau (BBB) page for RoamRight, but there is one under the name of Arch Insurance Company. The file shows an A+ rating and a total of 12 customer complaints in the past three years. Four of those were closed in the past 12 months.

Yelp shows 14 reviews of a mixed nature, with an overall 2.5-star rating. As with most travel insurance companies, the negative reviews are in regards to denied claims. Other reviewers report no difficulty with claims processing.

Trust Pilot has an incredible 793 reviews of this company, more than we have seen for any other travel insurance company by a wide margin. The overall rating is four stars, with 74% of reviewers rating the services as “excellent”. There are some negative reviews, but the company appears to have addressed them appropriately. Several of them are the result of policyholder misunderstanding of what the policy covers, a common issue with this type of policy.

The Bottom Line

Is RoamRight good travel insurance? What is the best travel insurance company? RoamRight has been around a long time and has a solid reputation. They do not offer the least expensive rates, but their plans are a good value particularly given the good reviews of the company. Those seeking customizable package plans from a company known for backing them with good service will find RoamRight a good choice.

About Eric Stauffer

Author: Eric StaufferI am a former insurance agent and banker turned consumer advocate. My priority is to help educate individuals and families about the different types of insurance they need, and assist them in finding the best place to get it.

  1. We have been using RoamRight for a while now, and never had a claim.

Well, this year we had a plane canceled on us at 5 am the day we were to leave.

We jumped in the car and drove 170 miles to catch a connecting flight. We made it (barely) and saved the trip.

When we called RR to see if we were eligible for any reimbursement they had us send in many claim forms, canceled checks, etc.

After over a month of this, and sending all they wanted, they advised us we were not eligible for anything.

We had asked for $18 for gas spent getting to our connecting flight. They wanted a gas receipt!

What I would like to know is why they couldn’t tell us before having us jump through all these hoops.

Will never use this company again.

  2. This is the worst insurance company that I have encountered. I purchased Arch RoamRight’s Travel Insurance to cover unexpected spending on my trip. The Benefit Limit for Trip Interruption is $5,000.

My trip was interrupted that a flight could not arrive in time to take me to the next destination. I had to purchase new flight tickets more than $3,500 due to this interruption.

After submitting my claim, Arch RoamRight promised me that they could send me a reply in one month. However, they mailed me a cheap envelope in 45 days after several calls from me. They REFUSED to compensate for my spending! What the [redacted]? Arch RoamRight, is your insurance crap or [redacted] to provide ZERO COVERAGE although customers paid premiums?

I hereby swear that 1) I will NEVER pay anything to Arch RoamRight, not buying its insurance any more; 2) I will tell everybody I know that Arch RoamRight is a crap and its insurance is trash; 3) I will find every opportunity to fight against such a cheating company in the rest of my life!

  3. Have had a poor experience with this company. The airline I was using got me to Africa two days late; the first because they’d been sending me a bogus itinerary and the second because they didn’t have a pilot for the second flight out. When I made a claim for the two lost days of the paid tour, they claimed an exemption under ‘mechanical airline problems’ and paid pretty much my premium back to me. Why anyone would ever buy from them when they don’t actually insure you is beyond me.

  4. Mr. Stauffer,
May I ask why you give a 4-star rating but show the negative comments in your review? I have used Roam Right before but thank the good Lord have not an occasion to use it. I probably will use it again next year, but really is it a good company to use?

    • Hi Harold,

That is a good question. You will be hard-pressed to find an insurance company that doesn’t have a lot of negative comments about them on consumer feedback websites. The reality is that people are much more likely to say something when they are upset versus when they are happy.

We feel it is important to show consumer feedback as part of our analysis, good and bad.

  5. A month passed by since the claim has been submitted. Roamright did not even touched my documents.

  6. We have had a horrible experience with RoamRight. They have the same two people trying to process hundreds of claims. We had to wait 30 days for the first claim which they made a mistake on. Now we have been waiting another two weeks in the “appeals” process. We got stuck in appeals even though it was their mistake. Won’t buy from them again. They need more help.
