About United Security
United Security Life and Health Insurance was founded in 1973 to offer an alternative to large insurance companies. Headquartered in Bedford Park, IL, the company expanded operations to serve six different states, and recently made a name change to United Security Health & Casualty, reflecting the expansion into the auto insurance market as well as the fact that they currently do not sell life insurance.
Currently, United Security is licensed in Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Nebraska. They have a selection of supplemental health products, including short-term major medical, dental, vision, hearing, critical illness, fixed indemnity, disability income, and accident hospital indemnity. While these products are offered in most states, they also offer auto products in Arkansas, Illinois, and Indiana.
Products are sold through a network of agents across the service area.
United Security Products
Most of United Security’s products are supplemental health insurance plans. Currently, the only product in the casualty line is auto insurance.
Short-Term Major Medical is offered to provide gap coverage for those who are waiting for a new insurance policy to kick into pay for major medical care as the result of an injury or sudden illness. It does not offer any coverage for preventative care, and pre-existing conditions are excluded. This plan offers coverage from one month to eleven months or for up 364 days. USH&C offers their short-term plans in Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Nebraska. Note that the policies can only be offered for up to six months in AZ, IN, and MO due to state regulations in which case the company offers 1-6 month policies.
The combined Dental Plus Vision and Hearing Plan has a $50 annual deductible and coverage of up to $1,200 per year. The plan covers preventative care as well as a variety of other services. Those who are between the ages of 18 and 85 are eligible for coverage, as well as their dependents.
Critical Illness insurance is available with coverage of up to $50,000. The policy pays out for a variety of serious diagnoses, including cancer, kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke.
Accident Hospital Indemnity Insurance from United Security is a guaranteed issue policy that provides coverage for hospitalization due to an accident. The plan pays $200 per day for 90 days, and that coverage doubles in the event of an ICU admission or burn unit admission.
United Security’s Disability Insurance provides coverage for up to five years. The policy also includes an accidental death benefit, hospital confinement benefit, and organ transplant benefit.
The First Benefit Cancer Plan is a lump sum payment policy with benefits from $10,000 to $50,000. Benefits are paid out upon diagnosis and can be used for any purpose.
The Security Access Fixed Indemnity Plan offers coverage for medical services and acts as a stand-alone or supplemental plan to a high deductible health insurance policy. It covers a range of medical costs including prescriptions and doctor visits.
There are a couple of auto products listed on United Security’s website; Road Warrior Safe Driver Program and Road Ranger Monitored driver Program.
United Security’s Road Warrior Safe Driver Program is offered in Illinois and Indiana. Offering a variety of discounts, the Road Warrior Plan is a non-credit, liability only program that offers consumers with a clean driving history a competitive rate.
Like many major insurance companies, United Security also has a monitored driving program that allows the insured to earn further discounts for safe driving practices. The Road Ranger Monitored Driver Program is currently only available in Indiana and Illinois and is designed to monitor driving and encourage safe practices while giving a discount for their clients participating in the program. The monitored driving technology is uncommon in small regional insurers but quickly growing in popularity, with most national level insurance companies offering the option.
United Security offers multiple payment options but gives discounts for paying in full. They appear to market their insurance towards drivers who may have difficulty getting good rates from major insurers but are not considered high-risk.
United Security Rates
United Security offers online quoting for both their supplemental insurance plans and auto products. Quotes can be done online, through an agent, or by contacting the toll-free number on the website.
We ran a quote on the Short Term Major Medical plan, based on a 30-year-old in Illinois. With a $500 deductible, the premium for three months of coverage came to $304.38, or $101.46 a month. That can be brought down to $66.88 a month with a $5,000 deductible.
Since we do not regularly do rate comparisons for this type of policy, nor do we run our sample quotes in Illinois, this quote does not allow us to compare to other companies. It does, however, give an example of the rates offered by this company and allow us to see the ease of the quoting process, which required only a date of birth and a zip code.
United Security’s website offers two locations under the “Policy Services” tab on their website. Under “Report A Claim – Auto” there is the option of an online accident report form and a 24/7 toll-free number to report an auto claim. Also under the Policy Services tab under “Report A Claim – Health” there is a toll-free number (for use during business hours) and access to multiple claims forms available for the company’s health products.
A convenient aspect of the website is the Live Chat feature that is offered during business hours that allows the client or shopper to communicate directly with the company.
Furthermore, the website shows the business hours of Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
United Security Health and Casualty has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file for the company in the past three years.
At the time of this review, Google shows 27 reviews for the company giving them a 4.5-star rating. Yelp has 4 reviews that total a 4-star rating overall.
It is not surprising to see little in the way of reviews for a company of this size. As they are relatively new to the auto insurance market, we may see more reviews in the future.
The Bottom Line

The company’s website offers a solid amount of information with regards to their products and their claims services making it convenient to use. From the information we have gathered, United Security offers a good selection of options and may be a good for those in the region to explore further.
