Northland Insurance was founded in 1948 to provide insurance to commercial trucking and public transportation companies, such as shuttles and limousine services. Northland currently has two offices, one in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the other Hartford, Connecticut.
Policies from Northland are sold through independent agents serving the commercial insurance market. The company is licensed to do business in all states except Alaska and Massachusetts.
Northland also has two other divisions aimed at other markets. Northfield Insurance writes commercial property and casualty for specialty markets, including liquor liability, general liability, and property coverage, and a long list of other commercial products. The other division is Northland Casualty Company, but this division does not have a section on the website describing its products.
Northland is owned by Travelers Insurance, which offers them a great deal of financial backing.
Northland writes commercial vehicle insurance for specific markets, while Northfield writes business property & casualty. All of the company’s divisions write commercial insurance exclusively.
Northland provides insurance for public transportation companies such as:
- Limousine services
- Athlete and Entertainment buses
- Church and Social Services vehicles
- Day Care transportation
Policies include all of the usual coverage with commercial auto insurance, in addition to a list of options specific to the needs of public transportation services.
These options include:
- Extended Cargo insurance for parcels being delivered free of charge
- Hired Auto
- Financed Value Coverage
- Non-ownership Liability Coverage
Northland writes both fleet and non-fleet insurance for trucking companies. They also have both preferred and non-preferred insurance programs for different types of risk.
Coverage in the truck insurance program includes all of the basics, as well as a long listed of added features and discounts, including:
- Automated FHWA filings/fees paid
- Free consulting with Risk Control Representatives
- Reduced rates for drug and alcohol testing
- Reduces rates for participation in 1-800 public feedback program
- Safety training materials
- Subrogation services even when losses fall below deductible
Business Property & Casualty
Through Northfield Insurance, coverage is available for more than 1500 types of businesses.
Coverage is available for:
- Commercial General Liability
- Commercial Property
- Inland Marine
- Liquor Liability
- Professional Liability
Coverage is available for a wide variety of types of business, including day care, counseling services, health clubs, service industry businesses, and more. Policy types and industries covered vary by area. Northfield Insurance is licensed only in Iowa and Missouri, but is eligible to write surplus lines in most other states.
Due to the fact that Northland works in such a niche market, it is difficult to obtain a price comparison, especially since they do not write any of the products we normally use for rate checks.
Northland’s very specific market means that those shopping for coverage will likely have to do a little more legwork to find comparison rates. This type of policy is sold through agents and in most cases these agents can help to obtain comparison quotes.
Northland offers the following options for reporting a claim:

The company website requests that all claims involving serious damage or any injuries should be reported directly through the claims phone line at the scene. Other claims can be filed via one of the many other options provided.
There is little information on the claims process beyond how to file, not surprising for a company handling commercial claims, which can sometimes be more complex than individual claims. Northland’s adjusters will likely lead customers through the claims process as it develops.
Northland Insurance is not BBB accredited, and no longer has a rating due to the BBB’s new aggregate system, which combines subsidiaries with their parent companies for the purpose of rating. Since Northland is owned by Traveler’s, they share a BBB record with that company.
Traveler’s has an A+ rating at the time of this review, with 331 complaints in the past three years. Unfortunately, the new system gives the reader no way of knowing which complaints refer to which of the many Traveler’s companies.
There are a few complaints against Northland Insurance scattered across various review sites. These complaints generally center around claims issues with customers – and non-customers – who were involved in an accident with a Northland insured and not satisfied with the outcome of the claim.
There’s nothing of major concern in terms of the complaints, and very few reviews in general, which is generally encouraging since people are more likely to write reviews when they are unhappy. It’s also worth noting that as a commercial insurer, Northland is not likely to have as many reviews online since businesses tend to use other measures to deal with issues.
|Rating Company||Grade||Financial Outlook|
Northland Insurance writes a very specific type of coverage, aiming mainly at commercial transportation services as well as writing more general commercial liability through their Northfield division. For those in search of specialty commercial insurance, Northland is likely worth a look. They have a good reputation and the backing of one of the nation’s largest insurance companies helping to ensure financial stability, making them a good bet for reliability. Anyone whose business insurance needs fit the Northland product lineup may find it worthwhile to obtain a quote.
