About The IHC Group
Independence Holding Company (IHC) is a holding company that has been offering a range of products to consumers through subsidiary companies since 1980. IHC’s subsidiary companies are:
- Standard Security Life Insurance Company of New York
- Madison National Life Insurance Company, Inc.
- Independence American Life Insurance Company
- IHC Specialty Benefits
- IHC Carrier Solutions
- Cook & Company Insurance Services
Through these companies, IHC writes short-term and supplemental health, dental, vision, life, and pet insurance policies. Products are sold through agents across the nation, and availability varies based on location. Some products are also sold online.
As previously mentioned, not all policies are available in all states, and they may be offered through any one of the subsidiary companies. Plan details are not offered on the website, but instead, a link redirects to healthedeals.com, which is owned by IHC. From there, individuals can shop for plans.
Dental and Vision
IHC offers both individual and group dental and vision plans. These PPO plans are offered either separately or as a bundle.
Short Term Medical
IHC offers short-term medical plans to fill gaps in coverage. Plans can be from 30-90 days in term length.
Supplemental Health Plans
IHC offers a selection of supplemental health insurance plans to cover costs not paid for under standard health insurance. These include:
- Gap plans to pay for deductibles and out-of-pocket costs
- Critical Illness insurance, a lump sum policy to be used at the policyholder’s discretion in the event of a serious diagnosis
- Hospital and Surgical Indemnity, which covers hospital and other costs related to inpatient and outpatient hospitalizations
- Rx Pay Card, covering out-of-pocket prescription costs
- Telemedicine services
Supplemental health plans are available to individuals as well as through employers in the form of voluntary benefits.
Group Life and Disability
IHC does not list any individual life or disability insurance products but does list group benefits in this category. These may be employer funded or voluntary benefits that can be elected by employees.
In 2017, IHC acquired PetPartners, a company that offers pet health insurance. These policies help cover the cost of veterinary bills for pets including cats and dogs.
IHC has a few products that are specific to states to meet particular legal requirements for employers. These include New York Disability Benefits Law coverage, Occupational Accident and Employer Liability in Texas, and Injury On Duty coverage in the state of Massachusetts.
IHC rate quotes can be obtained for most products on their healthedeals.com website. Since none of the products IHC offers are those we commonly use for rate comparisons, the rates returned on our quick quote are provided here only for informational purposes.
We ran a quote for dental and vision coverage for a single, 30-year-old male in California. A number of quotes were returned, starting at $18.20 a month for dental only, and $29.96 a month for a bundled dental and vision plan.
The quoting system is easy to use and does not require much in the way of personal information.
IHC’s website does not offer claim information, likely because claims are handled by the individual subsidiary companies through which the policy was issued and claim information varies from company to company. Policyholders should be provided with the correct contact information or can locate it on the specific company website.
The lack of claims information is not an uncommon practice for a holding company such as IHC, but it would be beneficial for customers to see a list of claims department contacts for each company on the main site.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
It is difficult to gather a clear picture for an insurance group like IHC since experience with each of the underlying companies will vary. We recommend reading reviews for the specific company with which the policy is issued.
There is no single Better Business Bureau (BBB) page for the IHC Group, and again, each company will have its own individual rating. When searching for ratings, we did find a lot under the name IHC Health Solutions, which is not a name that appears on the current IHC company list but does appear to be the same company. The name seems to refer to the short-term medical plans offered by IHC.
There are 56 reviews of IHC Health Solutions on Consumer Affairs, all of which are negative. Many of the complaints refer to refusal to pay claims and there are several complaints of policies being canceled without notice.
The six reviews of IHC Health Solutions on Pissed Consumer cite similar problems. While the complaint volume here is not high, the repeat of the same complaints is of concern.
The Bottom Line
Since IHC Group is, in fact, the holding company for several underlying companies, it is vital to learn more about the specific company that will be writing your policy before you purchase. IHC Health Solutions, which appears to be the short-term medical branch, in particular, has some issues of concern that are repeated in the complaints. If you are in the market for this particular product, be sure and do your homework and compare companies and their reviews and complaints thoroughly before committing.
