About American Republic

American Republic was founded in Des Moines, Iowa in 1929 to offer affordable health insurance options to Iowans. In 1945 they began expansion to other states, first into Minnesota and then quickly branching further across the country.

In 1999 American Republic Mutual Holding Company was formed, with American Republic Insurance operating as a stock company under the holding company, and in 2004 a sister company, World Insurance Company, was added to the roster. That same year the holding company changed its name to American Enterprise Mutual Holding Company.

American Republic today is licensed in most states and offers a few basic products. Availability varies by state, but in general, they offer short-term convalescent care, final expense whole life insurance, and Medicare Supplement.

The company’s headquarters remain in Des Moines, and products are sold through independent agents across the coverage area.

American Republic Medicare Supplement Plans

American’ Republic’s plans vary depending on the state; for the purpose of this review, we looked at the information for their home state of Iowa.

Although the website states other plans are available, the focus in on Plan F, and that is the only plan for which they offer detailed information. Since they are required to offer Plan A, we can safely assume that is on the list as well, but they do not offer further information on which other options are available.

Plan F is the highest level of coverage available for Medicare Supplement, paying for all out of pocket expenses including coinsurance and deductible amounts. Since it is also generally the most expensive plan, it is no surprise it’s the one American Republic chooses to highlight.

The website has a chart available that outlines the coverage for each of the eleven standardized plans but again states only that “some plans may not be available”, but not which ones.

A rate chart is not offered nor is online quoting on the American Republic website. They offer three options to get rates: by calling a toll-free number, contacting a local agent, or filling out a request form that can be submitted online.

Each of these options, as noted in the fine print, will result in solicitation attempts from the company.

Medicare claims are usually handled directly between the insurance company and the provider, and American Republic is no different. They do not offer claims information on their website other than directing members to contact the main customer service line with questions about a claim in process. This is likely mainly for their other products; Medicare Supplement claims are not mentioned specifically anywhere.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

We found several Better Business Bureau (BBB) records for American Republic, none of which reflect the company’s headquarters in Des Moines. One record, for a location in Lincoln, Nebraska, shows the company as being out of business, while another location in Rockford, IL also shows that mail sent out by the BBB was returned. These may be branch offices that have been closed recently. A location in Phoenix, Arizona shows an A+ rating with no complaints on file.

To broaden our search, we looked for the BBB file on the holding company, American Enterprise, and found a file for the Des Moines headquarters under that name, with an A+ rating and one complaint in the past three years.

Consumer Affairs has 3 reviews of American Republic, with an overall two-star rating that is based on the six reviews that contained star ratings. The newest review on the site is dated in 2014, and there is only one from that year. After that, reviews go back to 2012 and older which makes the information fairly outdated.

We were unable to find any more reviews and nothing recent to go on; generally, a lack of recent complaints is a positive thing for an insurance company.

The Bottom Line

There is not a lot of information regarding this company, including which Medicare plans they offer, rates, or recent reviews. While we also found no red flags, some shoppers may prefer to choose an insurance company that makes more effort to provide easy and accurate information about their products and rates.
