CNA Insurance Overview
CNA Financial is a financial group and commercial insurance provider headquartered at the CNA Center in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded in 1897 as the Continental Assurance Company of North America. In its beginnings, CNA provided accident and health insurance coverage to workers in the railroad industry. It later merged with the Metropolitan Accident Company, the National Fire Insurance Company and the American Casualty Company and, in 1963, took on the name Continental National American Group, or CNA for short. Currently, CNA has about 7,000 employees and is led by chairman and chief executive officer Thomas F. Motamed.

CNA offers risk control services for business in a variety of industries, including construction, education, real estate, healthcare, retail, technology, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, vehicle management and more. The company also offers business-related insurance coverage, including casualty, select risk, management and professional liability, property, surety, as well as coverage tailored for small businesses, middle market business, large businesses and a number of specific industries. CNA’s products are sold primarily through independent brokers and agencies.
Businesses can also utilize CNA’s various risk control programs and resources, which include the CNA School of Risk Control Excellence, various return to work programs, an allied vendor program, and tools for emergency preparedness.

CNA is not currently accredited by the Better Business Bureau. It does, however, maintain the bureau’s highest rating of “A+,” on its scale of A+ to F. In the last 36 months, there have been 30 total customers complaints against CNA filed with the BBB. Twelve of these were in the past year. All in all, two complaints stemmed from advertising or sales issues, five were filed in regards to billing or collection issues and the remaining 23 complaints involved problems with CNA’s products or services. There are no records of complaints regarding delivery, guarantees or warranties with CNA.

CNA is one of the largest commercial insurance companies in the United States, and can provide coverages to businesses of all sizes. Whether it’s a small enterprise or a fortune 500 company, CNA can provide protection. They have been around for over 100 years, and weathered many economic downturns.
CNA maintains mediocre financial ratings from the major rating companies.
Medium to large businesses should check out CNA and compare their quotes with other business insurance firms. Business insurance can range significantly in price depending on which company is underwriting, so make sure and price check. It is also important to compare apples-to-apples when looking at business insurance quotes. Commercial insurance policies can be written many different ways which changes the price, so be sure the different quotes are for the same coverage across the board.
