TravelSafe Insurance Summary
TravelSafe was founded in 1971, making it one of the more experienced travel insurance companies, and offers policies to both U.S. and Canadian customers. The company headquarters is located in Wyomissing, PA. TravelSafe is part of the Chester Perfetto Agency, Inc. and appears to also be affiliated with Trip Mate.
The company offers three plan levels with increasing coverage as well as a short list of optional add-ons that can help travelers create the package they need. The highest level includes the Cancel For Any Reason benefit, which is not available from every travel insurance company. There are also a few other available travel insurance products, including a group product and one for non-U.S. citizens.
TravelSafe policies can be purchased directly online or through one of the independent agents representing the company throughout both the U.S. and Canada.
The simple plan offerings from TravelSafe combine a long list of the features you would expect from a comprehensive travel insurance plan. The Basic, Classic, and Classic Plus policies are all very similar in coverage, although each level increases or adds certain benefits.
This package policy is intended for budget travelers or customers who just want a simple policy that covers the basics. Coverage includes:
- Trip Cancellation or Interruption at 100% of trip cost
- $500 Missed Connection coverage
- $500 Travel Delay coverage after 6 hours delay with a $100/day limit
- Medical coverage is $35,000 for accidents or illness, with $750 for dental included
- Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage at $100,000, non-medical not covered
- Baggage and Personal Effects coverage at $500, and $100 for baggage delay
- 24-hour assistance
It’s important to note what is not included in this policy – as a budget option there are a number of restrictions and limits to the coverage.
- Pre-existing conditions are not covered
- Trip cancellation reasons are limited and do not include certain workplace reasons, weather at the destination, or bankruptcy of the travel supplier
- Emergency evacuation for non-medical reasons, as mentioned above
- Accidental Death and Dismemberment
This plan is a fairly big step up from the Basic plan and his much higher limits, more than double in some areas. This is a comprehensive plan that is designed to meet the needs of most travelers, although it is still limited in some areas. Coverage includes:
- Trip Cancellation at 100% of trip cost and Interruption at 150% of cost
- $2500 in Missed Connection coverage
- $750 of Trip Delay coverage after 6 hours delay, with a $150/day limit
- Medical coverage at $100,000 with $750 of dental
- $1,000,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage and $25,000 for non-medical evacuation
- Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage at $25,000
- $2500 of Baggage and Personal Effects coverage and $250 for Baggage Delay
- Coverage for pre-existing conditions if the plan is purchased within 21 days of trip deposit
- Extended list of trip cancellation reasons, including workplace reasons and bad weather evacuation
- 24-Hour assistance
In most ways, the Classic Plus plan mirrors the Classic plan. All coverage limits are the same as at the benefits such as 24-hour assistance. The extra coverage provided by this plan is the Cancel for Any Reason feature, which covers trip costs at 75% no matter what the reason is for the cancellation. The coverage must be purchased within 21 days of trip deposit, and cancellation period is within 2 or more days of departure.
TravelSafe offers a few options that can be added to any of their policies to increase or add additional coverage, for an additional premium.
- Air Flight Accidental Death and Dismemberment
- Rental Car Damage
- Extended Personal Property
TravelSafe offers a few other products to provide coverage for special travel needs. These products are actually underwritten by other companies. Seven Corners Insurance writes Traveler’s Liberty and Liaison, and links for quotes and further information will take you to the Seven Corners website. Protect-A-Group is underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company. These policies do not appear under the products section of the website, but in links at the bottom of the page.
This is a product aimed at non-U.S. citizens visiting the U.S. It provides medical coverage as well as several other benefits.
This provides coverage for groups traveling together, including student groups and other tourist groups. Coverage is similar to the Classic package plan.
This package policy is provided by Seven Corners Travel Insurance, which appears to be an affiliated company as there is no information on the plan. The link directs customers to the Seven Corners website.
Using a basic test of a 30-year-old traveler from California taking a 2-week trip, with a trip cost of $5000, we received the following rate quotes from TravelSafe.
- Basic at $184
- Classic at $212
- Classic Plus at $334
These rates, especially the Basic rate, are on the high side considering the amount of coverage provided. With the lower limits of the Basic package, the expected rate should be considerably lower than the Classic, which more than doubles most coverage.
TravelSafe provides an online claims reporting service via the travelclaimsonline.com website, which is used by a number of different travel insurance companies to process claims. It is run by Trip Mate, so although Trip Mate is mentioned nowhere on the TravelSafe site, means that this company is likely handling administration for TravelSafe. There are several companies that fall under the Trip Mate banner, so this is not surprising.
Both claims reporting and status information are available on this same website. The company also offers claims status information through a toll-free phone number found with all of the contact information.
There appears to be no record for TravelSafe with the Better Business Bureau, but the parent company, the Chester Perfetto Agency, Inc., has an A+ rating. There is only one complaint listed against this company in the past 3 years, and none in the past 3 months.
A look at the various reviews available online for TravelSafe brings up many of the same complaints that are seen for other travel insurance companies. They include slow response times and refusal to pay claims.
There are also many positive reviews out there, most of which deal with the purchasing experience, but some expressing pleasure with the claims system as well. With a company that has been around several decades, the existence of negative reviews is to be expected, and there is a good balance with the positive ones.
TravelSafe has been around for a long time, but there is some confusion as to who administers and underwrites their policies. The plan options are simple and straightforward, but the Basic plan has very low limits and doesn’t seem to offer much value compared to cost.
Overall, the company has a fairly good reputation, but with so many affiliates involved, travelers should be wary of whether those reviews will even apply to their experience, as it may involve an entirely different company.
