Life Insurance for Military Dependents (Discounts & Rates)

Life insurance for military dependents is offered through the FSGLI government program and private insurance companies. The FSGLI program is a branch of the SGLI program offered by the VA that provides life insurance to full-time military members. Private insurers may offer policies to military dependents, however, they may not be as affordable.

What types of life insurance are available for military dependents?

If you are looking for military family insurance, there are two main ways you can go about getting life insurance; through the government or a private provider.

With both of these providers, your military spouse will have to purchase the main policy and be given the option of adding a dependent policy as well.

If you want your spouse to purchase life insurance directly through the government, the SGLI program is available to all military personnel and their dependents.

SGLI offers a sub-program, FSGLI, that handles the life insurance policies for dependants, along with other military spouse benefits. This policy is only available if the military member has a full-time SGLI policy.

According to the VA, this policy offers up to $100,000 in coverage in a term life insurance policy. The premiums for this policy are dependent on the age of the policyholder and will increase over time.

However, for the maximum coverage of $100,000, monthly premiums are under $10 per month until the age of 45.

Private Providers

There are a few private providers who specialize in life insurance for government workers and their spouses. Some of the most well-known are WAEPA and USAA.

However, while these companies may provide affordable policies, they may not cover active-duty military personnel, thus offering no military dependent policies.

It’s important to do a lot of research before purchasing a private policy.

Who offers the most affordable life insurance rates?

When purchasing life insurance, it’s always important to remain focused on the long-term viability of your policy.

While the rates offered by FSGLI are difficult to beat, especially once the policyholder is over 40 years old, there is the issue of retirement to consider.

If your spouse leaves the military for retirement or a permanent disability, there is a limit to how much of the policy follows you as you separate from military service.

Private policies often market themselves on the ability to be retained after you have left active duty.

However, as we stated above, not all of these companies will provide that coverage to active duty members, so they may be a more viable option once your spouse has changed roles or retired.

In the end, the best way to find affordable life insurance for military dependents is to shop around.

Get quotes from private insurers and speak to a FSGLI representative to ensure you fully understand the coverage provided to you and your spouse.
