About United Security
United Security Life and Health Insurance was founded in 1973 to offer an alternative to large insurance companies. Headquartered in Bedford Park, IL, the company expanded operations to serve six different states, and recently made a name change to United Security Health & Casualty, reflecting the expansion into the auto insurance market as well as the fact that they currently do not sell life insurance.
Currently, United Security is licensed in Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Nebraska. They have a selection of supplemental health products, including short-term major medical, dental, vision, hearing, and hospital accident indemnity. While these products are offered in most states, their recently added auto insurance is only available in Illinois.
Products are sold through a network of agents across the service area.
United Security Products
Most of United Security’s products are supplemental health insurance plans. Currently, the only product in the casualty line is auto insurance.
Short Term Major Medical is offered to provide gap coverage for those who are waiting for a new insurance policy to kick in. This plan offers coverage for up to three months to pay for major medical care as the result of an injury or sudden illness. It does not offer any coverage for preventative care, and pre-existing conditions are excluded.
The combined Dental Plus Vision and Hearing Plan has a $50 annual deductible and coverage of up to $1,200 per year. The plan covers preventative care as well as a variety of other services.
Critical Illness insurance is available with coverage of up to $50,000. The policy pays out for a variety of serious diagnoses, including cancer, kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke.
Accident Hospital Indemnity Insurance from United Security is a guaranteed issue policy that provides coverage for hospitalization due to an accident. The plan pays $200 per day for 90 days, and that coverage doubles in the event of an ICU admission or burn unit admission.
United Security’s Disability Insurance provides coverage for up to five years. The policy also includes an accidental death benefit, hospital confinement benefit, and organ transplant benefit.
The First Benefit Cancer Plan is a lump sum payment policy with benefits from $10,000 to $50,000. Benefits are paid out upon diagnosis and can be used for any purpose.
The Security Access Fixed Indemnity Plan offers coverage for medical services and acts as a stand-alone or supplemental plan to a high deductible health insurance policy. It covers a range of medical costs including prescriptions and doctor visits.
United Security’s Road Warrior auto insurance plan is only offered in Illinois at this time. It provides all of the legally required basic liability coverage along with optional coverage including comprehensive coverage and collision coverage, rental car, towing, and special equipment.
There is a long list of discounts, including the most common (multi-car, safe driver, anti-theft) and some less common choices. In fact, they even offer an SR-22 discount, which is highly unusual.
Like many major insurance companies, United Security has a monitored driving program that allows the insured to earn further discounts for safe driving practices. This is uncommon in small regional insurers but quickly growing in popularity, with most national level insurance companies offering the option.
United Security offers multiple payment options but gives discounts for paying in full. They appear to market their insurance towards drivers who may have difficulty getting good rates from major insurers but are not considered high-risk.
United Security Rates
United Security offers online quoting for their supplemental insurance plans, but not for their auto insurance. Auto quotes can be obtained through an agent or a toll-free number.
We ran a quote on the Short Term Major Medical plan, based on a 30-year-old in Illinois. With a $500 deductible, the premium for three months of coverage came to $304.38, or $101.46 a month. That can be brought down to $66.88 a month with a $5,000 deductible.
Since we do not regularly do rate comparisons for this type of policy, nor do we run our sample quotes in Illinois, this quote does not allow us to compare to other companies. It does, however, give an example of the rates offered by this company and allow us to see the ease of the quoting process, which required only a date of birth and a zip code.
United Security’s website does not offer claims information, which is unusual for a company that writes auto insurance, although fairly common with supplemental health insurance companies. The contact page offers only general phone numbers and a mailing address, along with a web contact form. The website also lacks a claims phone line, and an online claim filing option. We were unable to locate forms available to be downloaded.
Furthermore, the website shows only business hours of Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The website offered no indication of an after-hours contact for emergency claims.
A company that writes auto insurance should have some mention of claims on their website. While it’s likely claims information is provided to the insured, there should be a method of obtaining that information quickly and easily online.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
United Security Health and Casualty has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file for the company in the past three years.
The only review we could locate is on Google, and is from a customer who was upset by the lack of a grace period. The review does not touch on the products themselves, nor on the customer service experience.
It is not surprising to see little in the way of reviews for a company of this size. As they are relatively new to the auto insurance market, we may see more reviews in the future.
The Bottom Line
If you are in the market for supplemental health insurance, United Security appears to have a good selection and reasonable rates. When it comes to auto insurance, however, most drivers are likely to find better rates and more comprehensive service at a larger insurer. United Security’s auto program may appeal to those who have a few driving record issues or other problems that make it more difficult to obtain insurance. Overall, the limited information on this company makes it hard to draw a solid conclusion.
