Headquartered in Indianapolis, UniCare operates as a group of companies in several states including Indiana, Illinois, and Texas. The company website offers little in the way of company history or details, mainly listing the various companies underwriting products in various states. This description leaves a general sense of confusion, and the entire website follows that pattern.
While UniCare appears to offer individual health insurance plans, the website only lists dental, vision, and life & disability under the “Shop for Insurance” tab. On the main page’s footer menu, Shop for Insurance offers only a Medicare tab. There is no readily available listing of the Medicare products available, although there is some general information on how Medicare works.
Overall, the website is difficult to navigate and provides little useful information regarding the company.
UniCare operates as a subsidiary of Anthem, Inc., a major insurance company under the Blue Cross Blue Shield banner. Our research indicates that Anthem may be handling Medicare products directly at this point in time, but again this is unclear.
UniCare Medicare Products
UniCare offers an online search for Medicare plans by zip code and county. According to the main search page the company stopped offering Part D plans in 2015.
After attempting to search for Medicare plans in the UniCare headquarters zip code and county, we returned no search results, and a message stating that Part D coverage is not offered. Once we went through this search page, we were provided a link to browse products. This link redirects to the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield page. This page offers a full array of Anthem’s products.
We did attempt a second search using a zip code and county in Illinois, another state listed as part of UniCare’s coverage area. The search returned the same results.
We were unable to find any UniCare branded Medicare plans anywhere on the site.
Not surprisingly, since we were unable to locate plans being offered, we were also unable to return any rate quotes for this company. It is possible that the plans are now being sold under the Anthem name, but the website certainly doesn’t state that this is so or make any reference to it.
The UniCare site has some limited information in regards to claims, including where to download claims forms. There appears to be more claims information for members who are logged into the company’s user portal.
Most claims should be handled directly with providers, as with most health insurance companies.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
UniCare has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file in the past three years. There are several other BBB files for the various companies connected with UniCare, which makes it difficult to create a solid view of the company.
We did not find a record from UniCare on the National Committee for Quality Assurance health insurance company rating list. We were also unable to locate any Medicare plan star ratings.
In general, we found very little in the way of ratings and reviews of this company anywhere.
The Bottom Line
UniCare offers little information regarding their plans on their poorly organized website, and there is no rate information offered. There is little to go on in order to formulate a solid opinion of this company; they have multiple branches and present a less than clear and unified front in terms of brand and products.
