About Sublimity
Sublimity has a history that is similar to many other regional insurance companies; it was founded as a small, local fire insurance association. Originally protecting farms, the first company name was the Farmers Fire Relief Association of Sublimity, named for the town in Oregon where it was founded.
In 1954 the company name was changed to Sublimity Fire Insurance Company, and in 1972 the word Fire was dropped from the name. Sublimity expanded into Idaho in 1991, and in 2003 merged with Idaho-based United Heritage Financial Group. Operations expanded into Utah in 2008.
Sublimity writes a basic lineup of personal insurance including auto insurance, home insurance, umbrella, and their original product, farm insurance. Products are sold through independent agents across the three states they cover, and availability varies by state.
Sublimity Products
The Sublimity website offers limited information on their products, which includes personal auto and a range of home products.
Auto Insurance
Sublimity offers the choice of split or single combined limits for their liability policy, along with the usual coverage options to expand the policy. Those include towing, rental car coverage, and special equipment coverage.
While the website does not offer a lot of information regarding coverage, they do list their discounts, some of which are unusual. Aside from common options like multi-car, bundling, and good student, they also offer a discount for drivers living in small communities.
Home Insurance
Sublimity writes standard homeowners insurance along with coverage for condos, townhouses, and even rental homes. They also have a renter’s insurance policy available.
There are a variety of discounts offered for all of these policies, including bundling of auto and home. The website lacks information on the coverage included with these policies.
Farm Insurance
Sublimity’s original product, farm insurance, includes coverage for a home as well as farm structures and equipment. Farm auto is also available as an add-on option.
Like their home insurance policies, Sublimity offers a bundling discount with their farm insurance policies. They also offer several other discounts for farm customers.
Rates
Sublimity does not have an online quoting option, which is common for insurance companies of similar size and type.
They do appear to have a good list of discounts, including promising a big renewal credit for loyal customers, which should help make their rates more competitive. As a general rule, regional insurers have rates that are high compared to some of the large direct buy companies, but they offer the promise of personal attention and service to add value.
Claims
Although Sublimity does not offer a lot in terms of online services, they do offer online claims filing.
They also have a toll-free number, and claims can be submitted through your agent as well. There are separate claims phone numbers for roadside assistance as well as for auto glass claims. Like many insurance companies, Sublimity glass-only claims are handled through Safelite, a major auto glass repair company.
The website promises that the company will contact the insured “immediately” after a claim is filed to explain and begin the process. Beyond that, we did not see a lot of information on claims on the website.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Sublimity has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file in the past three years.
There are 25 reviews of Sublimity on Google, with an overall 2.9-star rating. Reviews are mixed, with several very detailed negative reviews as well as several positive. Complaints focus on poor communication and cancellation of policies or agent changes without warning. Sublimity does make a habit of responding to the reviews, both positive and negative, which is always a good thing to see.
Of the two reviews on Yelp, one is five-star and the other one-star. There is nothing of major concern in the reviews we have seen.
The Bottom Line
If you live in Oregon, Idaho, or Utah and prefer a small company with policies sold through an agent, Sublimity might be an option for you. They have a long history and what seems to be a good reputation, and although their product lineup is basic they cover the bases for those with relatively straightforward insurance needs.

Joan says
Thanks for the objective information on Sublimity insurance! I have a general question: If you do not have earthquake insurance, but there is an earthquake and your house catches on fire (due to gas line break), will they honor your claim? Also, do they have lower rates, if you are not in a high-risk zone (southern Utah)? Thank you!
Eric Stauffer says
Hi Joan,
In general, no they would not honor that claim since it was started by an earthquake. That is a very general answer, so its best to speak with your insurance company to be sure.
As far as rates in low-risk areas, absolutely they are cheaper. Insurance is based on risk, so the lower the risk, the lower the premiums.
Best,
Eric Stauffer
