In 1900, after a cyclone hit New Richmond, Wisconsin, a group of Cicero Township members founded an insurance company to protect against the cost of future severe weather. The unwieldy original name for the company, The Farmers Home Mutual Hail, Tornado, and Cyclone Insurance Company of Seymour, Wisconsin was in use until 1986, when it was changed to the much shorter Secura.
Company headquarters are located in Appleton, WI, with a second set of offices in Middleton, WI. Policies are sold through independent agents in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, and of course, Wisconsin.
Founded as a community-based mutual insurance company, Secura continues that tradition with a variety of community involvement and non-profit support efforts.
Secura writes auto insurance and home insurance for individuals, business policies, farm insurance, and a selection of coverage for teams, events, and non-profit organizations. Information on these products is limited; visitors are directed to contact an agent for details.
Auto & Home Insurance
Secura’s approach to auto and home insurance is to offer them as a package policy; we were unable to find an indication that they are offering these policies separately at the time of this review.
The package policy, called Mile-Stone, is available with two levels of coverage, Basic and Gold. The policy has a single premium and a combined deductible in the event of a claim that involves both auto and home.
The Mile-Stone Basic plan covers the home at 100% of replacement cost and the vehicle at limits that can be selected by the policyholder. Many options can be added to this plan, including:
- Identity theft
- Broadened personal property coverage
- Auto rental
- Towing and Labor
- Loan/Lease coverage
All of these are automatically included in the Gold level package, which also increases the reconstruction cost coverage to 125% and kicks up water backup and high-value item limits as well.
The Gold package also includes Travel Rescuer, a package travel insurance plan not offered with the Basic plan.
Both levels include Pet Protector coverage and Accident Forgiveness automatically. There are a variety of available discounts, including customer loyalty, good student, and hybrid car.
Secura also offers a Mile-Stone package for renters that combines a renter’s package policy with auto insurance.
Secura offers package policies for businesses and non-profits that includes common coverage like property and liability, as well as options that can be added on. These include Non-profit Directors and Officers Liability and Employment Practices Liability among others.
Secura also has workers compensation coverage that can be added to a package or purchased separately.
Secura’s farm insurance packages can be customized to cover a variety of different farming operations. Base coverage includes property and liability, with farm auto, livestock coverage, equipment breakdown, and farm worker’s compensation all available as well.
Events, Clubs, and Teams Insurance
Secura provides specialty policies for events such as festivals, concerts, banquets, fundraisers, and more.
They also provide coverage for a sports team, various types of clubs, and business leagues.
These policies offer package coverage for a variety of risks, including liability.
Secura does not offer online quoting, which is fairly common for regional insurers operating on an agent-driven basis. Quotes are only available through a local agent; the website offers an agent locator.
Because they only appear to offer a combined auto and home policy, it would be difficult to compare their rates to other companies that sell products separately. Comparing their rates to the total premium of an auto-home bundle elsewhere would provide the best information.
Secura has toll-free 24/7 claims reporting lines across their coverage area; the number to call depends on where the insured resides. There are three different numbers for different regions.
Claims can also be reported via email or by fax, but there is no online claims submission. Additionally, we did not see a place to download or access the forms in order to submit them by email or fax.
Secura’s preferred repair shop network is called SureChoice, and they offer expedited services and a lifetime guarantee on repairs. As always, the customer can choose any repair shop for claims work.
For glass only claims, Secura has a glass repair program called Glass Express. This system connects the insured to a local glass repair shop that is part of the Glass Express network and will handle the repair quickly.
There is a separate claims line, especially for worker’s compensation claims.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Secura is not Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited but has an A+ rating with only eight complaints on file in the past three years. Of those, only one was closed in the past 12 months.
We found only two customer reviews on Yelp – one positive and one negative. One had an excellent claims experience, and the other had a difficult claim. Without further information, these two reviews tend to cancel each other out.
The Bottom Line
There is not a lot of information out there in regards to Secura, so it is hard to provide a truly clear picture. There does not seem to be any red flags, however, and for those who like the idea of bundled insurance with a homegrown, agent-driven company, Secura might fit the bill.
