About Rockford Mutual
Founded in 1896 to provide tornado insurance for local farmers, Rockford Farmer’s District Mutual Tornado Insurance Company was named for the Illinois town in which it was created. In 1971, the company became Rockford Mutual Insurance Company and began expansion into other lines of business.
The company today offers coverage in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. They continue to operate as a mutual company and sell products through independent agents in all three states. Rockford Mutual Products
Rockford writes a straightforward lineup of personal and commercial insurance products. The website offers a basic overview of these products.
Homeowner’s insurance includes basic coverage for the structure, personal property, and liability, on what appears to be a named perils basis. The website provides a list of covered perils and the base coverage but does not list any possible add-ons or endorsements.
There is a list of common discounts, including an auto/home bundling discount, protective devices, and a new home credit.
Coverage is available for standard single-family homes as well as condos and manufactured homes; Rockford also offers a renter’s insurance policy.
Rockford’s auto program is fairly standard, offering all of the usual coverage both mandatory and optional. There are no gimmicks or trendy endorsements listed, just the usual options of roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, and the less common loan/lease gap coverage.
There are a handful of common discounts, which include the auto/home bundle, good student, loss-free, and anti-theft device discounts.
Rockford’s original product line is still offered as a comprehensive farm owner’s package. The policy covers farm structures as well as a home on the property, personal and farm property, liability, and more.
Farm policies can be customized to the needs of a particular type of operation, including orchards, grains, livestock, dairy, and more. Endorsements include equipment breakdown, peak season inventory, pick-your-own operations, pollutant cleanup, overspray liability, and more.
There is a multi-policy bundling discount available with the farm owner’s policy.
Rockford writes business policies for a wide variety of business types, including retail, restaurants, professional and medical offices, auto repair shops, contractors, churches, and more.
The package policy can be customized to meet the needs of each type of business and includes coverage for business property, general liability, and business income among other options.
The Rockford website gives the appearance of offering online quoting, but the “get a quote” feature sends the visitor instead to a list of local agents. That is not surprising for this type of regional insurance company, but a little misleading in the way it is set up.
Choosing an agent using the interactive map is the only way to get rate information for this company. Without that information we are unable to compare them to their competitors, but as a general rule regional insurance companies tend to be priced higher than larger ones.
There is a toll-free number listed for filing new claims, and the site states that the claims department is available during business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The site does not make it clear how to handle reporting a claim after hours, but does say to call only during business hours in regards to existing claims – this seems to indicate that there is also an after-hours option. It would be very helpful if the company clarified this better on the website.
An email address is also listed, as is a separate phone number for roadside assistance claims.
Beyond this, there is not much in the way of information offered in regards to claims. There is a policyholder login area where presumably, more information might be available.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Rockford Mutual has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), where there is only one complaint on file. There have not been any reviews have been left by customers on the BBB page.
There are 19 reviews on Google, with an overall 2.3-star rating, indicating a mix of positive and negative reviews. Some of the positive reviews are from employees of the company, which are less helpful. There are a few positive reviews written by people who were involved in an accident with a Rockford driver, which is fairly unusual in terms of insurance company reviews. The negative reviews cite mainly claims issues, but many are not detailed. Rockford does make an effort to reply to the reviews.
Overall, the company appears to have a good reputation.
The Bottom Line
The information on this company’s products is limited and rates are not available, which makes them difficult to compare. Those who prefer a smaller, regional insurance company and like to work with an agent may want to consider Rockford. They have a long history and a good reputation, an may well fit the needs of those with relatively basic insurance requirements.
