About Rockford Mutual
Rockford Mutual was founded in 1896 in Rockford, Illinois. The original company name was Rockford Farmers’ District Mutual Tornado Insurance Company; the word Farmers was dropped in 1940, but the name remained a mouthful. It was in 1971 that it was shortened to Rockford Mutual Insurance Company, formed a successor to the original under the law, and then absorbing all of its assets.
Rockford writes personal and commercial property & casualty insurance in its home state of Illinois as well as Wisconsin and Indiana. Products are sold through independent agents across these three states.
Rockford Mutual Products
Rockford Mutual writes a lineup of basic insurance policies for individuals and businesses. This includes home insurance, auto insurance, and commercial package policies. The company’s website does not offer much in the way of detail on their products but they do offer basic overviews of each of the products.
Rockford Mutual’s personal auto program offers all of the basics of liability and optional coverage. In addition to the full coverage options – collision coverage, comprehensive coverage, and medical payments – they also offer options such as roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, auto loan/lease, and trip interruption.
The common discounts are also available from Rockford, such as good student, anti-theft, defensive driving course, and multi-policy discounts.
The homeowner’s insurance program from Rockford offers coverage options for houses, condos, mobile and manufactured homes, and apartments. While the website does not specify, the listing of apartments likely refers to a renter’s insurance policy.
The program appears to be a standard one, offering coverage for the structure (this coverage differs for condos and apartments), personal property, and liability.
Rockford offers several discounts on their home insurance policies, including a new home discount, renovation credit, security system credit, and more. Multi-policy discounts are available when bundling home and auto with Rockford.
Going back to their roots, Rockford writes farmowner insurance policies for a variety of farm types. Coverage includes a home on the farm, other structures, personal and farm property, and liability.
In addition, the farmowner program provides coverage for livestock and crops. Policies can be customized with a variety of add-on coverage options that include equipment breakdown, peak season inventory, pick-your-own operations, and chemical liability.
Rockford writes business insurance policies for a variety of industries, including retail, wholesale, medical and professional offices, contractors, and more.
These policies include coverage for structures, business property, loss of income, and a variety of potential liability risks.
Also available from Rockford is commercial auto insurance, which protects vehicles owned by or used by a company and its employees in the course of doing business.
Workers Compensation coverage can be purchased individually or added to a commercial package to provide comprehensive coverage meeting all of the company’s needs.
Rockford also offers flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance program. This provides flood coverage that is not included in the standard homeowner’s insurance policy.
Finally, Rockford also writes both personal and commercial umbrella insurance.
As an agent-driven company, Rockford Mutual does not provide online quoting, instead directing site visitors to contact an agent. This is fairly standard practice for small, regional insurance companies, but can be frustrating to the modern insurance customer looking to gather rates quickly.
Contacting an agent for a quote can be time-consuming and also result in unwanted solicitation efforts, which can be a source of frustration to many.
Rockford Mutual proclaims on their website that their claims service “rocks” and the claims page offers an explanation of why that is. What it doesn’t offer is any information on how to reach the claims department, nor how to file a claim.
We found the claims phone number on the Customer Support page instead; it can be reached during business hours – 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. central time. There is also an after-hours phone number that appears to send the insured to a different call center. This page also provides an email address for the claims department.
Overall, the website offers little in the way of useful information regarding the claims process and indeed sends the visitor on a hunt to locate contact information that should be readily available when clicking on the tab that says “Claims”. It would seem as though Rockford does not see a lot of business come through from online shoppers.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Rockford Mutual holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The company does not have any complaints listed in their file in the past three years.
There are 10 Google reviews that mixed, with some positive and some negative reviews. One review comes from an employee, which doesn’t hold as much weight as those featuring a customer experience.
There is nothing of major concern in the reviews, nor is the complaint volume at a level that is worrisome. They appear to have a good reputation.
The Bottom Line
Those who like a local company and the personal service of an agent may want to consider Rockford. Without much information on their products and rates, however, we are unable to compare them readily to other companies. Insurance customers seeking easy online service will find that – and likely lower rates – from larger direct-buy companies.
