Noridian has been in business for 30 years and offers a wide range of voluntary employee benefits that allow employers to provide the pre-tax option of a variety of supplemental coverage. They also offer employer paid and sponsored benefits and sell products directly to individuals.
Among the products they offer are dental, vision, short and long-term disability, life insurance, travel insurance, critical illness, and accident coverage. Their benefits are underwritten by a wide variety of well-known insurance partners, including MetLife, VSP, and LifeLock.
All of Noridian’s products are sold through local independent agents and serviced through the various carriers that provide the coverage.
Noridian separates its product listing into employer-paid, employer-sponsored, and individual benefits. There is some overlap between the categories, as many products are offered in each category.
Dental is offered in all three categories, which means it can be an employer paid, sponsored, or individually purchased benefit. The dental coverage option under individual products also has the option to include vision coverage in one policy, although vision can also be purchased separately.
Coverage under this plan varies by carrier, and each category offers different carriers.
Offered in all three categories but through three different carriers, vision plans cover preventative care as well as prescription eyewear and contact lenses. Coverage varies across carriers.
Life insurance is offered as either an employer-paid or employer-sponsored benefit, and directly to individuals through a combined accident, illness, and life product that allows the insured to select coverage options.
Term life insurance options are offered through the employer-sponsored benefits with coverage in increments of either $10,000 or $20,000, and with caps of $500,000 or $200,000 depending on the policy type. Level term coverage is available with term lengths ranging from 10-30 years.
The employer-paid life insurance plan has coverage up to $750,000, with the employer paying a minimum of 25% of the premium. This plan includes accidental death & dismemberment coverage.
Short and Long-Term Disability Insurance
Offered only as employer-paid or sponsored plans, short term and long term disability pay a percentage of the employee’s salary, as well as other benefits.
Short-term plans on both sides pay 70% of salary for a limited number of weeks. Maternity coverage is included in these plans. The long-term plans reduce income to 60% but include a host of other benefits.
Disability coverage is offered in a different type of a la carte product to individuals.
Medical GAP Indemnity
Offered only through employers, this is a supplemental policy that can help make up the difference when the employer changes to a new health plan that carries higher deductibles. The plan is designed to help employees with increased out of pocket costs.
Offered as an option to individuals along with life, disability, and accident coverage, separate critical illness plans are specifically offered as employee benefits.
These plans provide lump sum payments to be used on whatever the policyholder chooses when diagnosed with a critical illness, and include limits of up to $100,000.
Coverage is provided for accidents in all categories, although in different product types. Employer paid or sponsored accident insurance includes death and dismemberment benefits and can be extended to the employee’s spouse and dependents as well.
This coverage is only offered through the employer-paid or sponsored categories and provides coverage for the needs of employees and their spouses in the event of an accident or illness that requires ongoing assistance with everyday life and activities.
This product is offered only to individuals. It covers medical care abroad with plans that include a single trip, multiple trip, and expatriate or student longer term coverage.
Identity Theft Coverage
This plan is designed to help with the cost and effort involved in solving an identity theft situation. It can help to recoup losses, protect credit cards, medical records, and other private information, and can be extended to family members. This plan is only offered to individuals.
This type of policy helps to pay for the high cost of veterinary care for household pets. This can include preventative care, treatment and testing, and even euthanasia coverage. This type of insurance is only offered on the individual level.
Due to the fact that Noridian offers services in partnership with many different companies, and the fact that they have so many different products, it is very difficult to provide a price comparison.
Many of the offered products are also employer paid or sponsored, which can greatly affect the end cost to the insured person.
Because Noridian partners with many different companies and claims are handled through each company individually, there is no one route to filing or handling a claim. Noridian does promise to help any insured with their needs when a claim arises and to act as an intermediary when necessary.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
We were unable to find a Better Business Bureau (BBB) record for this company, although Noridian Mutual Insurance Company, their parent organization, is listed on the BBB with an A+ rating. There are no complaints listed and just one negative review.
We were unable to find further reviews or ratings of any kind on this company, making it difficult to make a determination as to their reputation. When it comes to insurance, no reviews is generally a good sign, as more people take the time to complain than to write a positive review.
The Bottom Line
Noridian is likely to appeal mainly to employers seeking to provide pre-tax benefits to their employees. They do offer some individual plans, but it’s likely that the larger portion of their business is on the employee side. Since they partner with many different companies, research into the company that actually underwrites the policy is strongly suggested prior to purchasing.
