MBG has a history that mirrors many other mutual insurance companies; they were founded by a small group of local business owners to help protect each other from the financial losses following a fire. Created in Pennsylvania in 1908, the company still operates as a policyholder-owned mutual company.
MBG writes auto, home, and business insurance, and sells its products through independent agents across the two states where they are licensed. They serve 75,000 policyholders according to their company website.

The three main products offered by MBG are personal auto, home insurance, and business insurance – including business auto.
MBG’s personal auto program is called PROcision Auto, which is a customizable package policy.
It includes all of the basics – liability coverage, comprehensive coverage, and collision coverage – along with a list of optional add-ons that can be selected to meet each driver’s individual needs. These include:
- Repair or Replacement Cost coverage
- Auto Loan/Lease coverage (gap insurance)
- Auto Advantage – a package add-on that provides locksmith services, airbag replacement, towing and labor, and more
There are a variety of discounts available, including a 15% discount for having both auto and home with the company. Common discounts include good student, safety features, and multi-car.
Accident forgiveness is offered automatically on all full coverage policies; a first accident is forgiven if the driver has been loss-free for five consecutive years. This is often an add-on that requires an extra premium even at much larger companies.
MBG has home insurance policies to cover a variety of home types.
This includes their three tiers of homeowner’s insurance for single-family homes. The base policy is their standard homeowner’s package, which includes coverage for the home itself on a named perils basis (that means they cover only damage from those risks listed in the policy), personal property, liability, and loss of use.
The Preferred policy is a step up from the basic and offers broader coverage with increased limits available for structure and personal property coverage.
The Promark program is the company’s highest level of homeowner’s coverage. It offers increased limits across the board, including higher limits for high-value items like jewelry, electronics, and more. This program is generally intended for higher-value homes.
MBG also offers insurance coverage for condos and townhouses, designed to cover personal property and the portion of the structure for which the owner is responsible.
Other home products include renters insurance and second/vacation home insurance. This last is a dwelling fire product that generally has limited coverage for personal property.
MBG offers a range of business insurance options. These include contractor’s insurance, Business Owners’ policies, and other commercial package policies.
They also provide business auto coverage, which can be added to any package policy as needed. Each of the packages is customizable to the needs of the particular company. Add-on specialty coverage choices include:
- Equipment breakdown
- Condo officers and director’s liability
- Liquor Liability
As MBG is a small, regional company, it is not surprising that they do not offer online quoting. They are an agent-driven company dedicated to the concept of personal service, and not offering quotes online is common to this type of company.
The website does offer an agent search function to help visitors find a local agent. While we do not usually expect companies like Mutual Benefit to compete on rates alone with major direct buy insurance companies, this company does have a lot of discounts available that can help bring rates down. Small insurers also rely on service to make up for higher rates and add value.
Glass-only claims through national glass company Safelite are the only type of claim Mutual Benefit customers can file online.
All other claims can be filed by calling a 24/7 toll-free claims line. This line is only for initial reporting; there is a separate line that can be called to check on the status of claims during business hours. A claims adjuster will be assigned and make contact within one business day of the claim being reported.

MBG has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), where there are only three complaints on file in the past three years, none of which have been closed the past 12 months.
There are 22 reviews of this company on Google, with an overall 3.1-star rating. The comments are mixed, with several five-star, glowing reviews, and several complaints of poor customer service. The company appears to take the time to respond to customer complaints, which is always a positive thing to see.
As they are a small company, we are not surprised to see that there are a limited number of customer reviews out there. In general, however, the complaint volume is low and they seem have a fairly good reputation.
The Bottom Line
Mutual Benefit Group is worth a look for those who live in Pennsylvania or Maryland and prefer the personal service of an agent and a local company. While they probably will not compete for the most budget-conscious customer, they have a solid reputation and appear to provide good overall value, especially for those bundling home and auto insurance.
