About Builders Insurance Group
Builders was founded in Georgia in 1992 in response to the difficulty those in the home building industry were having obtaining the coverage they needed. Originally offering coverage only in Georgia, in 2004 the company began expansion in part through acquisitions. They first moved into South Carolina and Florida, and then continued into other states.
Today the company offers their products throughout the southeast and has also expanded west into areas like Oklahoma and Utah, and north to states such as Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Builders write products specifically designed for the needs of home building companies and has become one of the larger insurers in this niche market. They have also expanded to write workers compensation insurance in a variety of other industries, including retail, service, professional, and other businesses.
Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, Builders sells its products through independent agents across their coverage area.
Builders focuses on business insurance, creating both package and a la carte policy options for a variety of industries, particularly home builders.
One of the company’s initial products, today they offer some form of workers compensation policies in 12 states. They write workers comp for their niche industry – homebuilders – as well as other construction industries. Their products are also available to non-construction businesses including retail, wholesale, professional offices, light manufacturing, and several more.
Available in 15 states, Builders’ general liability products cover a range of risks and can be combined in a package policy. They write these policies for specific business types that fall within the general area of Builders’ niche:
- Residential general contractors
- Light commercial general contractors
- Trade contractors
A product focused on the industry for which the company was founded, this product is available only in Georgia. It provides coverage for risks specifically associated with the construction of homes, covering building materials, scaffolding, temporary structures, paving, landscaping, and more.
Currently offered in 13 states with expansion planned in the near future, Builders’ property insurance products are available to the same group of industries as are their general liability policies. This product is also offered as part of a package policy.
Commercial umbrella policies are available to provide liability protection that goes above and beyond the coverage offered on the underlying policies. This product is offered in 13 states with plans to expand and is offered to the same niche markets as the liability and property coverage, with the exception of developers.
Because Builders writes business insurance only and this can be a varied and complex area, a sample quote would not provide a great deal of information even if it were readily available. Like most commercial insurance companies, Builders does not offer online quoting. The quote request form provides contact information to a local agent who can provide a more detailed and accurate quote than an online system could manage.
Builders offers a toll-free line for filing claims 24/7. They also have online claims reporting available, with separate links for workers compensation and all other claims. The actual claims process will differ depending on the type of policy.
The website also assists with worker’s compensation by offering an online doctor search as well as state by state information on laws associated with these policies.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Builders Insurance Group has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file in the past three years. That’s not entirely unusual for a commercial insurance company, as businesses tend to use means other than online complaints to deal with problems.
In fact, we were unable to find complaints elsewhere regarding this company, nor did we find reviews of any sort. As previously mentioned, this is not surprising for this type of company. Even though it is not unusual, it is still positive to see a total lack of complaints.
The Bottom Line
Builders Insurance Group is likely to be on your list if your company is in the construction industry, and particularly if you are in Georgia. Their niche focus is likely to make them popular with companies that fit that bill, but they may also be a good choice for companies seeking workers compensation. It’s likely that most customers come to Builders via referrals either by agents or by other companies in the same industry.
