Ranking at number 34 among all of the states for auto insurance rates, the average price for a policy in Kansas comes in just under the national average. That is a good ranking considering the fact that Kansas law requires quite a bit of mandated coverage on every policy, and shopping around can really bring the cost for individuals in well under the average, too.

The Basics of Auto Insurance in Kansas

Under Kansas law, every driver must carry liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and a list of no-fault benefits under the personal injury protection (PIP) coverage as well, all at minimum limits.

The minimum bodily injury limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident for bodily injury, with at least $25,000 for property damage. These limits are on par with most other states.

Also required is PIP coverage, which pays out benefits after an accident regardless of who is at fault. While most states generally require an aggregate limit, Kansas breaks it down, requiring:

  • $4,500 in medical expenses coverage per person
  • $900 a month in loss of income coverage
  • $25/day for in-home services
  • $2,500 for final expenses in the event of a fatality
  • $4,500 for rehabilitation services
  • Survivor benefits of $900/year for disability or loss of income and $25/day for in-home services for one year

Finally, Kansas also requires that all drivers carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage for bodily injury. The limits are the same as the at-fault liability limits, $25,000/$50,000.

That is a long enough list of coverage required on your Kansas car insurance, but if you have a loan or lease there may be another list of requirements from the financial institution that you will also need to meet. In most cases, you will need to provide comprehensive coverage and collision insurance, and there may also be limits on the deductibles you can select or even a requirement for higher liability limits on some leases.

Specifics of Kansas Auto Insurance

Kansas car insurance basics are already pretty specific, but there is one more important piece of information all drivers should know. Although Kansas is a no-fault state when it comes to car insurance, this does not mean a driver cannot be held liable for an accident.

In Kansas, no-fault benefits kick in right away after an accident, regardless of who is at fault and before a fault determination is even made. Fault, however, will be determined, and in some cases, the driver that has been found at fault can be sued for pain and suffering.

Under the no-fault law, the personal injury protection is primary coverage; after that is exceeded, the at-fault driver’s liability coverage will kick in – that coverage will also cover property damage as a result of the accident. Injured parties cannot seek damages for pain and suffering beyond the limits of insurance from another driver unless certain conditions are met. The conditions are that the medical bills must be more than $2,000, and the injury includes one of the following:

  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Loss of a body part
  • Fracture to a weight-bearing bone or any fracture that is compound, compressed, comminuted or displaced
  • Permanent injury
  • Permanent loss of bodily function
  • Death

In any situation that meets these conditions, the at-fault driver can face a lawsuit and be held financially responsible for damages in court. A case like this will very quickly exceed the limits of a legal minimum policy.

Our Process

Our goal is to present the best picks for car insurance, and not just the least expensive, so all of our chosen companies meet our standards for reputation. We determined this by looking at consumer reports from trusted sources as well as looking directly at customer reviews of each company to get a feel for their experience. Particularly important to making our list is a solid claim handling reputation, as claims are where a good car insurance company really shines.

Since we know that most insurance shoppers are concerned with rates, we also included a look at the cost of car insurance from the top-rated companies in Kansas in order to select top picks that are a good value for your dollar. All of our picks have competitive rates to go along with their great customer service.

We also made sure that all of our top picks provide coverage across the state, whether in the city or out on the farm. USAA is always a recommended choice for military members and their families, but due to the limiting eligibility requirements, they are not on our list. Each of the companies we selected offers coverage to the general public and not only to any one subset of the population.

Our Top Picks

These three companies are all great choices for car insurance in Kansas, matching great services with competitive rates.

With a top rating in the region from J.D. Power for overall customer service and also a top ranking nationwide for claims satisfaction, Auto-Owner has an excellent, solid reputation for taking good care of their customers. J.D. Power gives them a full five out of five on the overall regional survey for claims handling, which is where service really counts.

Auto-Owners also comes in with some of the better rates in the state for coverage ranging from basic to full. They compete easily with bigger names in car insurance and come out on top – and at the top of our list.

Shelter Insurance

Shelter took the top award from J.D. Power in the region for overall customer satisfaction for 2017, and the company has a lot of very satisfied customers. That makes them a safe bet from a customer service standpoint – they will be there for you when you need them.

They also have very good rates for Kansas drivers and are particularly competitive for drivers with credit issues. This company brings together service and price to add up to great value.

American Family

American Family is a budget-minded car insurance customer’s top pick, with rates that come in low for just about any driver across the state. They also have some good discount options to reduce the cost even more, including an auto and home insurance bundle.

American Family also has a good reputation, rating well with J.D. Power and generally enjoys low complaint volume and satisfied customers. They are a good choice if you prefer big-name, national level insurance company.

Shopping for Car Insurance in Kansas

Since all car insurance companies in the state write policies that provide all of the legal minimums, what you will need to decide before shopping is what increases and added coverage you want to add to your policy. Highly recommended are higher liability limits than the state minimum, and fortunately, it does not usually cost much to increase that coverage and give yourself better protection.

You will also need to select deductibles, which are a great place to bring rates down. A slightly higher deductible can often make up for the increase from kicking up your liability limits.

Once you have selected limits, deductibles, and optional coverage, make sure that as you shop around you are getting quotes that match all of those selections. Insurance companies usually have a standard policy that they quote for people who are not sure what they want; if you receive quotes for different coverage levels you will not be able to get a fair comparison.

Although all of the top picks for Kansas are pretty big companies, smaller insurers can often provide a great value as well along with local service. It is always worth having an independent agent quote some smaller companies for you so that you can get a broad view of what’s out there. Just be sure that view includes a look at each company’s reputation.

The Bottom Line

Kansas drivers have some great choices for car insurance, and some of the best-rated companies in the state also offer some of the great rates. Since rates can be very individual, however, it is always worth a look at as many companies as possible before you choose.
