Amica launched its mobile app back in 2011, making it one of the earlier adopters to what is now becoming standard for insurance companies.
Unlike some companies, whose apps are bloated with extra features, Amica keeps its offerings quite slim and no-nonsense. The mobile app performs most of the key functions of the company’s website and is geared primarily toward existing policyholders rather than those interested in the company.
Amica offers its app for Android and Apple devices like iPhones and iPads.
For an Apple device, you’ll need something running OS 7.0; for Android, you’ll need OS 4.0 or better.
The Amica app lets you do several of the things you could do from the website:
- Pay your policy premiums.
- Review your policy information.
- File a claim and check on its progress.
- Contact roadside assistance or request emergency repairs.
- Maintain a home inventory for help with future claims.
- Schedule reminders for general home/vehicle maintenance appointments.
There are a few important things that you can do only from the website, however:
- Schedule payments in advance. Mobile payments can only be instant/same-day transactions.
- Create an account. You’ll need to set up your account from the main website before you can log in from your phone.
- View life insurance policy information. While home and auto policies can be viewed from your phone, the app currently does not support reviewing life insurance policies.
It’s also worth noting that once you’ve filed a claim, the only way to add any additional information is to contact your adjuster. For example, if you take additional pictures after the initial report, there is no way to upload these through your mobile phone to update the claim in progress; you’ll have to email them directly to the claim handler assigned to your case.
Google Play / iTunes / Amazon Review
The iTunes store shows an average rating of 2.5 stars. Google Play’s ratings are a little more charitable, with an average of 3.3. In both cases, there are a few recurring complaints:
- Poor design, including it being difficult to navigate and information being hard to find.
- Inability to pull up an ID card.
- Various bugs, including issues with the Droid Turbo and Android 5.0 OS, and intermittent crashing.
The biggest complaint from users is that, as of the newest version, you cannot download your insurance ID card through the app. Whether this is by design or simply a matter of customers not being able to find the right information due to the way the app is laid out, the issue is a major one.

Even though Amica has had its app live for a few years, it seems the app design leaves something to be desired. A majority of reviewers say that there is no real benefit of using the app vs. simply logging into the website, which is a sign that the app needs some serious re-working if it’s going to be competitive in today’s market. For starts, making a policy ID card easily available and quick to find should be a priority. Until that happens, many mobile users won’t be happy with this.
