Affirmative Insurance Services
Financial Strength

Affirmative Insurance Group is a Texas-based insurance company focused on the non-standard car insurance market. They serve several states in the Southern and Midwest parts of the country.

Our Affirmative Insurance Services review will cover everything you need to know about this high-risk car insurance company.

Affirmative Insurance liquidation was ordered in 2016. The Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association took over.

About Affirmative Insurance

Affirmative Insurance Services of Texas was founded in 1998 in Addison Texas under the name Instant Insurance Holdings, Inc. They acquired two non-standard insurance companies in 2003 and went public the following year.

The company continued to expand in the following years, focusing entirely on the non-standard auto insurance market and acquiring a third company, USAgencies. By 2015, however, the company was struggling and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The liquidation of Affirmative was discharged in 2018, and they continue to operate.

Affirmative offers coverage through independent agents in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, and through an unaffiliated general agency in California. All of their car insurance policies are aimed at high-risk drivers that do not qualify for coverage in the standard market.

In 2016, the Texas government confirmed that Affirmative was ordered into liquidation. The Affirmative Insurance phone number is no longer in service.

Affirmative Auto Insurance

Affirmative writes non-standard car insurance, which means they are largely focused on liability-only policies that provide coverage meeting the state legal minimums.

The company website does not offer much in the way of information for prospective customers. There is not a list of available coverage, discounts, or any other details on the policies themselves.

There is an area for existing customers on the website where bills can be paid and policies managed online and an area for agents. The impression is that this company likely gets most of its business through agent referrals and not through general internet searches.

Affirmative Insurance Rates

Affirmative does not offer online quoting, although there is a form that can be filled out to request a quote. This will result in an agent contacting you either via phone or email to gather details and prepare a quote.

This sort of system is very common for companies that are smaller and get most of their business through agents, but it can be frustrating for those who want to gather rate information without a lot of solicitation as a result.

As a non-standard insurer, Affirmative’s rates would not be comparable to standard insurance companies and we would only expect them to be competitive with similar companies.

Affirmative Insurance Claims

Claims can be filed online at any time or can be filed by phone. The phone option appears to be open only during business hours which are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central Time.

The website also allows customers to upload claim documents and check on the status of a claim online. There is no further information on claims nor is there any indication that this company has a preferred repair network.

Affirmative Insurance Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Affirmative Insurance has a dismal F rating with the Bette Business Bureau (BBB), where the file cites that there have been 11 complaints filed and the company failed to respond to seven of them. There have been no complaints closed in the past year.

There are 27 one-star, negative reviews of this company on Yelp. The majority of these are from people who were involved in an accident with another driver insured by Affirmative, rather than from the company’s own customers. The complaints cite slow claims response and failure to pay out on claims. There are corroborating reviews from body shops and from a lawyer that has dealt with the company in court.

We were unable to find any positive reviews or comments about this Affirmative to redeem themselves from the negative reviews.

Affirmative Insurance: The Bottom Line

Non-standard insurance is a difficult market and it can be hard to find good coverage for a good price, but there are better choices out there. There is little information on policies or rates, the company is just out of bankruptcy, and their reputation does not look good. Before choosing this company, be sure to really compare your options with and look at other companies offering similar services.

  2. Can you help me locate someone in the corporate office of Affirmative? I have a BIG complaint on how my granddaughters claim is being process. It has been one month (1 month) and Affirmative still has not processed her claim. We have received huge run arounds by the claim being transferred to different people. Now I am being told we will be charged a storage fee.

I have never dealt a with a more difficult business then Affirmative. Please very RUDE people.

I have filed a claim with the Insurance Commission of the State of California. It has been a very stressful process and I will write every bad review there is on the computer.

We are asking for a check for $8,000.00 for my granddaughter’s car being totaled. Affirmative agreed a couple weeks ago to pay $6,400.00 in repairs (including a bent frame) on the car, but why would we agree to that? A bent frame devalues the car. The State of California says the value of the car has to be 80% or above to total it out. Please help me resolve this mess so we can move on with our lives and my granddaughter can get another car. I am her grandmother and she has given authorization to Affirmation for me to handle this. She works 9am to 5:30 everyday and is unable to deal with these insane calls. Thank you

    • Hi Gail,

The information I was able to find on their website is as follows:

      4450 Sojourn Road
      Suite 500
      Addison, TX 75001

      Good Luck!

  3. STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!!!! Unprofessional and very rude!!! I was in a 4-car accident, which was not even my fault and my insurance (Affirmative) was not easy to work with.. I was able to get a rental but I had to go through hell and high water to get it!!! My adjuster was rude [Redacted] and her manager was worse!!! They never returned calls, they always had a bad attitude when I called, and they acted as if I wasnt even paying them.. I will never use this insurance company EVER again..

  4. Stay far away from these guys…Do not even drive next to their “insured” drivers though you wouldn’t know until they hit you.

My problem is the same as the previous poster except they’re not my company. 10 calls a day all recorded and after a month i finally spoke with someone. The claim had been initiated by mine, but they just…I don’t know. Said forget it.

Needless to say after a couple months and frustration i received a check with the attached estimate for what their driver did to my car in the amount of $1008.
Consider this: Im stopped at a red light driving a plastic dodge dart. Their driver rear ends me in a 98 suburban TANK…How the HECK does one think $1008 is going to cover the damage!? Its not even remotely close….

Im pretty much skrewed because i thought it would be a decent idea to go through them and that was my mistake, but ill find a way.

  5. Do not go with this insurance. They never answer your call nor are they of any help. All they want is money. My cars been in an accident and i have full coverage yet, after 3 weeks, they still have not resolved the claim. I called them on the same day and ever once in awhile after that. They don’t have any of the calls in record.
