About Affirmative Insurance
Affirmative Insurance was founded in 1998 in Addison Texas under the name Instant Insurance Holdings, Inc. They acquired two non-standard insurance companies in 2003 and went public the following year.
The company continued to expand in the following years, focusing entirely on the non-standard auto insurance market and acquiring a third company, USAgencies. By 2015, however, the company was struggling and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The liquidation of Affirmative was discharged in 2018, and they continue to operate.
Affirmative offers coverage through independent agents in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, and through an unaffiliated general agency in California. All of their car insurance policies are aimed at high-risk drivers that do not qualify for coverage in the standard market.
Affirmative Auto Insurance
Affirmative writes non-standard car insurance, which means they are largely focused on liability-only policies that provide coverage meeting the state legal minimums.
The company website does not offer much in the way of information for prospective customers. There is not a list of available coverage, discounts, or any other details on the policies themselves.
There is an area for existing customers on the website where bills can be paid and policies managed online and an area for agents. The impression is that this company likely gets most of its business through agent referrals and not through general internet searches.
Affirmative does not offer online quoting, although there is a form that can be filled out to request a quote. This will result in an agent contacting you either via phone or email to gather details and prepare a quote.
This sort of system is very common for companies that are smaller and get most of their business through agents, but it can be frustrating for those who want to gather rate information without a lot of solicitation as a result.
As a non-standard insurer, Affirmative’s rates would not be comparable to standard insurance companies and we would only expect them to be competitive with similar companies.
Claims can be filed online at any time or can be filed by phone. The phone option appears to be open only during business hours which are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
The website also allows customers to upload claim documents and check on the status of a claim online. There is no further information on claims nor is there any indication that this company has a preferred repair network.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Affirmative Insurance has a dismal F rating with the Bette Business Bureau (BBB), where the file cites that there have been 11 complaints filed and the company failed to respond to seven of them. There have been no complaints closed in the past year.
There are 27 one-star, negative reviews of this company on Yelp. The majority of these are from people who were involved in an accident with another driver insured by Affirmative, rather than from the company’s own customers. The complaints cite slow claims response and failure to pay out on claims. There are corroborating reviews from body shops and from a lawyer that has dealt with the company in court.
We were unable to find any positive reviews or comments about this Affirmative to redeem themselves from the negative reviews.
The Bottom Line
Non-standard insurance is a difficult market and it can be hard to find good coverage for a good price, but there are better choices out there. There is little information on policies or rates, the company is just out of bankruptcy, and their reputation does not look good. Before choosing this company, be sure to really compare your options with and look at other companies offering similar services.
